“The Secret Life of Cows”
Photographs by Glen Wexler
Closing Reception Presented by Track 16 Gallery

Track 16 Gallery is proud to present a special Closing Reception for one of this summer’s most talked about exhibitions, “The Secret Life of Cows” Photographs by Glen Wexler, on Saturday, August 4, at Bergamot Station’s Track 16 Gallery in Santa Monica. The Reception will feature a discussion, Understanding the New Creative Realities of Photography… or Why Cows Don’t Play Baseball moderated by Debra Weiss with special guests Glen Wexler and renowned photography gallerist and curator, G Ray Hawkins.

The exhibition, on view now through August 4, 2007 features large-scale prints of images from Wexler’s newly published book, The Secret Life of Cows. In these images, Wexler fuses photographic reality with fantasy to capture these death-defying bovines as secret agents and superheroes in imaginative and absurd situations where cows ineptly attempt to defend their species. The book, which will be available for purchase through the duration of the exhibition, includes a foreword by Monty Python/Spamalot’s Eric Idle, who professes to “know a bit about cows in comedy.”

The Secret Life of Cows has been praised by the Los Angeles Times, NBC News, Los Angeles Magazine, AmericanPHOTO and many others. Among the many celebrities and art world luminaries in attendance at the full house opening, pop culture artist John Van Hamersveld quipped, “These prints are juicy couture for cows.”

Celebrated for creating hundreds of imaginative and elaborate album covers for artist such as Michael Jackson, Van Halen, Black Sabbath, and ZZ Top, Wexler was among the original artists to blend digital imaging technology with the creative process and is credited as a worldwide leader in the field. Tim Wride, Curator of Photography for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), and executive director of No Strings Foundation says of Glen: “Wexler’s pictorial constancy as a risk taker and his deftness as a problem solver are the characteristics that distinguish his work and make his images both meaningful and memorable.” This is Wexler’s second solo exhibition in Los Angeles.

Understanding the New Creative Realities of Photography… or Why Cows Don’t Play Baseball

A conversation with Glen Wexler and G Ray Hawkins moderated by Debra Weiss

After attending the opening reception for Glen Wexler: The Secret Life of Cows, renowned photography gallerist and curator, G Ray Hawkins reflected, “The same way that Yves Tanguy, Max Ernst and Marcel Duchamp created nonsensical narration and thoroughly enjoyed successfully pulling our legs, photographers can now cut and paste their ideas the same way painters cut and paste ideas from their imagination to canvas, all for the purpose of creating a narrative and telling a story. This is a cohesive body of work. Glen with his surrealist attitude is really having fun with us.”
