14 July, 2005, Santa Monica”In conjunction with the exhibitions, “PREMEDITATED: MEDITATIONS ON CAPITAL PUNISHMENT: recent works by Malaquias Montoya,” and “DEAD WRONG: INTERNATIONAL POSTERS AGAINST THE DEATH PENALTY,” Track 16 Gallery presents the theatrical piece, “THE EXONERATED.” Written by Jessica Blank and Erik Jensen, “The Exonerated” is a compilation of true stories based on interviews with men and women who spent anywhere from two to twenty-two years on death row only to later be found innocent and released.

“The Exonerated” won the 2003 Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway play, The Drama Desk and Lucille Lortel Awards for Unique Theatrical Experience, and the L.A. Ovation Award for Best World Premiere Play. It was nominated for four additional Ovation Awards, three NAACP Theater Awards, the Dramatists” Guild Hull-Warriner Award, and the John Gassner Playwriting Award. “The Exonerated” also received the Defender of Justice Award from the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, Court TV”s Scales of Justice Award, and the Justice in Media and Arts Award from Death Penalty Focus.

This is a charity event and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to *Death Penalty Focus, an organization that educates citizens about the reality of the death penalty in an effort to propel our country to a more humane, more fair, more honorable system of justice. The exhibitions,”PREMEDITATED: MEDITATIONS ON CAPITAL PUNISHMENT: recent works by Malaquias Montoya,” and “Dead Wrong: International Posters Against the Death Penalty,” will be on view through August 27, 2005. Regular gallery hours are Tuesday through Saurday from 11 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. On August 20 at 7:00 P.M. Track 16 Gallery will host a panel discussion “Activism Through Art: The Death Penalty,” presented by the L.A. Chapter of Death Penalty Focus and the L.A. Coalition Against the Death Penalty. Panelists include artist Malaquias Montoya, author Barbara Becnel, and actors Mike Farrell (President of Death Penalty Focus) and Shelley Fabares.
