Guest-curated by San Francisco-based surfing devotee Bob Carrillo and René de Guzman of the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Surf Trip is a contemporary exhibition honoring the thriving surf communities of California. From its idyllic roots in eighteenth-century Polynesia, Melanesia and Micronesia, surfing has grown in scope and complexity, integrating local traditions with global travel, urban life and an appreciation of the natural world. Drawing on artifacts, painting, sculpture, film, video, and installations by surfing enthusiasts and artists from San Francisco, Los Angeles and beyond, Surf Trip sheds a unique light on a way of life, a sporting culture and an emerging art form. "The show is a beautiful fusion of Hawaiian and California beach cultures on the contemporary arts stage," says curator Bob Carrillo.

Highlights of the show include 25 life-size, polyurethane hula dolls by Kevin Ancell; video works by Tracey Moffatt and Brian Taylor; paintings of surfing celebrities by Gomez Bueno; photographs of the women's surfing scene by Elizabeth Pepin, and much more. In addition, Surf Trip boasts an extensive survey of surfboards that trace the technical and aesthetic developments of the surfboard through the 20th century. Bay Area artists in Surf Trip include Kevin Ancell, Leo Bersamina, Jessica Dunne, Margaret Kilgallen, Sally Larsen, Barry McGee, Elizabeth Pepin and Keith Tallett. Southern California artists include Gomez Bueno, Russell Crotty, Jim Ganzer, Peter Schroff, Craig Stecyk, Brian Taylor and Cris Hicks.

Upcoming "Track 16 Nights" events will include readings related to the exhibition and screenings of vintage surf films. Schedule to be announced.
