11 September, 2008, Santa Monica—Track 16 Gallery is pleased to welcome back the talented and creative Lun*na Menoh for a one-night-only fashion-performance-happening. COUTURE SALVAGE will take place on Saturday, October 11, 2008, at 8 PM. Admission is $10, pre-paid reservations will be taken.
Lun*na Menoh’s new project “Couture Salvage” is a work that comments on waste and how it can be transformed into new things, for instance Couture:
A vacuum cleaner becomes a jacket! A speaker becomes a skirt!! A golf bag becomes a necklace!!! A sofa becomes a coat!!!!
Lun*na Menoh saves these everyday items from the “graveyard of junk” and turns them into gold. Menoh’s focus is on the circulation of ‘goods.’ No fabric, no piece of furniture, and no mechanical part are wasted! She comments, “To consume is the ultimate act of recycling.” Menoh’s band “Jean Paul Yamamoto” will perform an original musical score to accompany this particular fashion show. All works by Lun*na Menoh will be for sale after the performance!!!
Lun*na Menoh is a Japanese born Renaissance artist who lives in Los Angeles. Her work deals with fashion, clothing, and exposing the invisible thread between performance and fabric by making sculptural dresses, paintings, and directing and choreographing fashion shows featuring her conceptual but wearable outfits. Her memorable, ground-breaking multi-disciplinary art project “Dirty White Shirt Collars” took place at Track 16 Gallery in 2006.

LUN*NA MENOH BIOGRAPHY
Lun*na Menoh is a Japanese born Renaissance artist who lives in Los Angeles. Her work deals with fashion, clothing, and exposing the invisible thread between performance and fabric by making sculptural dresses, paintings, and directing and choreographing fashion shows featuring her conceptual but wearable outfits.
One of her dresses is in the permanent collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Also one of her original dresses/artwork was part of the “Addressing the Century: 100 Years of Art and Fashion” exhibition that took place at the Hayward Gallery, London in 1998.
Her multi-disciplinary art project “Dirty White Shirt Collars” which includes paintings, music, DVD, and a fashion show/performance received a grant from the Peter S. Reed Foundation in New York in 2005. The presentation of this project took place at Track 16 Gallery in Santa Monica.
Menoh has also designed costumes for the Takashi Murakami and Andy Warhol events at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. She has also designed uniforms for “Royal/T,” a Japanese-styled café-shop-art space that focuses on contemporary art and pop culture Japanese artifacts.
Menoh has worked in music since 2001, and was a member of a band called “Seksu Roba” (Eenie Meenie Records) who were nominated for LA Weekly Music Awards in 2003 and 2004. They also toured in Europe, Japan and the U.S.A., including MOCA (Los Angeles), LACMA, and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art.
In 2006 Menoh started her own band, “Jean Paul Yamamoto” featuring her costumes with a combination of art performance, rock n’ roll theatrics, and intense sounds with the aid of her fellow band members: ex-DEVO drummer Alan Myers, avant-guitarist, Shin Kawasaki, plus back-up singers/dancers Ayako and Moeko. “Jean Paul Yamamoto” flirts adventurously with the sounds of Pop, Punk, Electro-Funk and Enka.
